A brief note
HELEN STANES was born near Coimbatore, in Southern India, in May, 1916. She attended boarding school in England and went on to the London School of Design in St John's Wood. She met her future husband, Guy Grey-Smith, at a dance attended by young airmen, and they married shortly after, in October, 1939.
When the couple finally settled in Perth after the war, Helen quickly established herself as a leading printmaker, and, from 1954 to 1967, she received a great number of large commissions. But printmaking was an arduous process, and she damaged a hand. So she took up painting, mainly collage, and quickly established herself a new career.
An excellent resume of Helen's great contribution to the local art scene is Gwen Phillip's fine book "Helen Grey-Smith".
