A brief note
ADAM DERUMS was born in Northam, Western Australia, on the 18th April, in 1968. He studied at, and graduated from, Curtin University, with a Batchelor of Arts degree in 1988. Adam was awarded the University’s Visual Arts Painting Achievement Award the same year.
His first show was with the Beach Gallery in 1989, and I believe it may have been the last show held there. He went on to have a further five solo or group exhibitions with the Delaney Gallery. He was also represented at the Art Gallery of WA in 1990. Adam had major shows with the Goddard de Fiddes Gallery in Perth. For the past fifteen years he has been teaching art at the Guilford Grammar School.
Adam is an adventurist. He questions media and technique, so his works are much changed over the last twenty years. From bright colourful, almost romantic abstractions, to experiments in 3-dimensional art, art where he merges traditional colour with spatial forms. He has created an art form from chemical materials, as in the background of his seated photograph. And, more recently, he has pursued an interest in a difficult but disciplined dripping technique, almost devoid of colour.
