A brief note
ROBERT BIRCH was born in Perth, Western Australia, in 1939. Initially a schoolteacher, in 1962, Bob, after extensive travel in Europe, enrolled at the Harrow School of Art in Middlesex, England. Upon graduation in 1965, he had a show in London’s famous Cork Street, following which took a teaching job in Saudi Arabia, and visited Morocco, Jordan, and the West Bank. He returned to Australia at the end of 1967, taking up a position at the Art Gallery of WA.
For the next few years, he interspersed working, painting, drawing and exhibiting, with extensive travel in the Middle East. Bob had many shows with us, either at Gallery 52 or Delaney Gallery, and for many years was at the forefront of serious painters in Western Australia.
In orabout 1990 Bob moved to Forster in New South Wales in the company of his fellow painter, Sieglinde Battley. Last I heard they were living in Smiths Lake in NSW.
