DAVID ASPDEN was born in England, in 1935, and migrated to Australia in 1950.
He worked as a painter and signwriter for some years before he had his first one-man show, with Watters Gallery, in Sydney in 1965. He soon established a reputation as one of the country’s leading colourists, with a strong tendency towards abstract art forms.
He was awarded the Wynne prize in 1995, having entered frequently for the previous twenty years.
He is represented in the Art Gallery of NSW, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Queensland Art Gallery, and principally in the National Gallery of Australia.
The two screenprints shown here were a result of a visit to New Britain in 1981.
David liked a drink or two. I fondly remember a long lunch a few years ago, followed by sundowners at Dawn Fraser’s Riverview Hotel in Balmain, with David, and a few of his Sydney art friends.
